clowning around is a body of work in various media paying homage to the artist’s grandmother, Dr. Bette Catoe Strudwick, and her magnificent clown collection. the work illustrates the complexity of the material and metaphorical history of the clown figure in american history, highlighiting connections between the clown figure and the social construction of “blackness” in the american mind.
